The gym is the most common method of working out. But are you making some classic mistakes that will decrease the efficiency and effectiveness of your workout? Check out these common gym mistakes we all make and see if you have any corrections that need to be made.
- You’re in autopilot mode: Your brain should be as stimulated as the rest of your body. If you find yourself going through the same routine, same elliptical machine, group classes, and exercise circuits, then it’s time to switch things up.
- Too much chit-chat: If you are talking too much, then you are not fully focused on your exercise. If you workout with a trainer or friend who initiates the chatter, you can tell them “Let’s catch up after the session,” or “I really like when our sessions are all about the exercise. It makes me feel strong and focused.” They should get the picture.
- You jump right in: Never underestimate the power of a warmup. Even 5 – 7 minutes of cardio and some gentle stretches are enough to ease your body into a workout. You will last longer and feel better the during and in the days following your workout.
- Bad gym etiquette: Proper gym etiquette is important for the safety & health of your gym members. Be sure to re-rack your weights, wipe down your machines and equipment, and give people their space when waiting for other machines. Stubbed toes, spreading germs, and invading peoples personal will mark you as a inconsiderate gym member.
- Revealing too much: You are at the gym to work on improving your body, not to show it to everyone else. So don’t let it all hang out. It’s important to wear properly fitting clothes (not to big/slouchy or tight/revealing) to the gym for ultimate results.
We are bound to commit some of these common gym mistakes from time to time, but be conscious about them and try to correct them when they happen. This will keep your workout and progress on track and keep you in good graces with the rest of your gym community
