In recent years, the trend of pet care has grown significantly.  You see people taking their dogs and even cats on strolls, in pet strollers.  Some pets even have designer clothes.  For some people it may be ridiculous, but for those who love their pets this is just a means of showing their appreciation to an animal who happens to bring joy to their life.

Protection from ticks or fleas is a top priority for a lot of pet owners, whether you dress Fido up in costumes for Halloween or not.  It’s important to take into consideration that many of the shampoos and sprays may contain ingredients that can cause more harm than help.  The Natural Resources Defense Council has a section in their website that contains questions and answers about harmful pet products.  It explains important things to know about when searching for a flea and tick product and surprising info for those who may want to go ‘natural’ when selecting a product.  The NRDC site contains a ‘GreenPaws Flea and Tick Products Directory’ within their Simple Steps section.

The commitment in owning a pet should go beyond just feeding them and taking care of their bathroom needs.  Take a look below at some surprising statistics interesting facts that may affect your cuddly creature when using certain flea and tick control products.

  • In 2005, the company Hartz stopped the production of several flea and tick products after thousands of illnesses and deaths in cats and kittens
  • The EPA received 28,895 reports of harm suffered by pets in 2007
  • In 2008, the EPA received 44,263 reports of harm suffered by pets
  • Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on products designed to kill fleas and ticks for household pets
  • Fleas and ticks tend to live on unhealthy pets with low immune systems (feed them safe, healthy food)

There are a couple of other things that a pet owner should keep in mind.  One is that you absorb these chemicals yourself, through your skin.  If you have children who play with the animals or are affectionate with them, they are absorbing the chemicals too.  Next, if you use a shampoo for your pet with harmful chemicals, you are allowing these ingredients to enter our water system.  If the filtration system for our water cannot completely remove traces of pharmaceuticals then it is not likely set up to remove the ingredients that kill fleas or ticks. Please think about these two notions; we take so much for granted.  Let’s be more tender with the things we love and need.
