Less Trash Thursdays!!

Less Trash

Today is the day of the week to be conscious of your consumption and your personal carbon footprint!  Be aware of the trash you create and try and find ways around it.
Below are some suggestions, from a great site No Impact Man.

No soda in cans (which means we’re probably less likely to get cancer from aspartame).
No water in plastic bottles (which means we get to keep our endocrines undisrupted).
No coffee in disposable cups (which means we don’t suffer from the morning sluggishness that comes from overnight caffeine withdrawal).
No throwaway plastic razors and blade cartridges (I’m staging the straightedge razor comeback).
Using non-disposable feminine-hygiene products that... Read More

Google going green and beyond

brightsource-solar-power-photo

Earlier this week, Google announced it will invest $168 million in the Brightsource Energy's Ivanpah solar power plant in the Mojave Desert in California. The solar farm will have a capacity of 392 MW (megawatt).  According to Google, that's the equivalent of "taking more than 90,000 cars off the road over the lifetime of the plant, projected to be more than 25 years." Construction began last fall and should end up 2013. If $168 million isn’t enough to impress you, so far, Google has invested $250 Million in Clean Energy.

Kudos to Google for such an applaudable effort in the green... Read More

“All my life I've known better than to depend on the experts.” – JFK

The cat is out of the bag. The “experts” are now admitting that the Fukushima catastrophe is worse than what has been sugar-coated. It is on par with the Chernobyl disaster. On par meaning that the level of the disaster has been raised from a level 5 to a level 7 status, the highest rating on the international scale for nuclear incidents.

On April 26, 1986 the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant experienced an explosion and fire which released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the... Read More

Simple Steps that Actually Make a Difference for the Environment

Going green does not have to be a complete lifestyle change. If you can do it, then that’s great. However, the most important thing to keep in mind is to do something – anything. Do one thing that is Earth conscious. You know that driving your car is adding to your carbon footprint – so can you walk or ride a bike or carpool to where you need to go? Can you take the time to opt out of receiving physical junk mail and/or catalogs that you don’t use? One inconvenience to your time is a good, helpful change... Read More

Celebrate Earth Day at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden!

fbg_ed event

Take a deep breath and stop to smell the thousands of plants found in Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden.  No words can describe this majestic place.  Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is home to more than 4,000 colorful and vibrant species of plants including, cycads, ferns, orchids, aroids and bromeliads.

Being a foodie, a restless cook and a gardener my favorites section is the Tropical Fruit Pavilion which features rare fruit trees from Southeast Asia to the Keys Coastal Habitat where a marsh-like ecosystem runs wild with birds, insects and even (my favorites) butterflies.

Fairchild is dedicated to global conservation programs;
